Android 16: What Changed and What Did Not

Correction: The original version of this article called itself a review based on two weeks of daily use and said the writer had reviewed every major Android release since version 7. Mapletechie does not have records supporting those hands-on claims. This page has been rewritten as a sourced overview rather than a personal review.
The earlier article also called Google's design language “Material You 3.0” and described older privacy controls as new Android 16 features. Google's name is Material 3 Expressive. Approximate location permissions and the microphone and camera privacy indicators arrived in earlier Android releases, not Android 16.
What Android 16 actually added
Google released Android 16 in June 2025. Its user-facing changes included Live Updates for time-sensitive activities, stronger support for hearing devices, security improvements and groundwork for desktop-style windowing on larger screens. Some visual changes associated with Material 3 Expressive arrived through later updates and did not appear identically on every device.
Google's Android 16 overview describes the consumer features, while the Android Developers summary lists platform and behaviour changes that affect apps.
Material 3 Expressive is the correct name
Google introduced Material 3 Expressive as an expansion of its Material 3 design system. It uses more prominent motion, shape and colour across Android and Wear OS. The timing depended on the device maker and software update, so installing Android 16 did not guarantee that every phone immediately received the same interface.
What was not new
Android already let users give an app approximate rather than precise location access before Android 16. The system's microphone and camera indicators also predated this release. Presenting those controls as Android 16 additions overstated the upgrade.
Updates still depend on the phone maker
The original article said a 2023 flagship had already been forgotten by its manufacturer. That generalization was not supportable. Update commitments differ by brand and model, and several major 2023 flagships were sold with multi-year support promises. Buyers should check the manufacturer's support page for the exact device rather than infer support from its age alone.
Android 16 made meaningful platform changes, but the earlier article mixed new features, older privacy tools and unsupported hands-on impressions. This version keeps the claims tied to Google's documentation and avoids a review verdict that Mapletechie did not establish.
