Fix an External Monitor That Shows No Signal

A monitor that says No signal is telling you something useful: it has power, but it is not receiving a usable picture on the selected input. That narrows the problem to the path between the computer and display.

Work through that path in order. Random driver updates and factory resets can waste time when the monitor is simply listening to the wrong HDMI port.

Check the display itself

  1. Open the monitor's physical menu and select the input that matches the connected cable, such as HDMI 1, DisplayPort or USB-C.
  2. Raise the brightness and confirm the power light behaves normally.
  3. Turn the monitor off, unplug its power for 30 seconds, reconnect it and turn it on.
  4. If the monitor has more than one input, try another one with the matching menu selection.

If the monitor's own menu will not appear, the display or its power supply may be the problem. A no-signal box or working menu usually means the panel can at least produce an image.

Simplify the cable path

Disconnect docks, splitters, KVM switches and nonessential adapters. Connect one monitor directly to one computer with the shortest suitable cable you have.

Reseat both ends firmly. DisplayPort plugs can have a latch, and some USB-C connectors feel inserted before they are fully seated. Inspect the ports for debris or damage without poking metal into them.

Then test one variable at a time:

This is faster than guessing. If the monitor works with another computer, focus on the original computer, adapter or settings. If a different display works on the original computer, focus on the monitor, input or cable.

Make Windows look for the display

Press Windows key + P and choose Extend or Duplicate. Then open Settings > System > Display, expand Multiple displays and use Detect if it appears.

Microsoft's external-monitor troubleshooting guide recommends removing docks and adapters, checking the cable and testing the monitor with another system before moving to drivers.

You can also press Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. The screen may blink and you may hear a beep. Restart the computer if the display still does not appear.

Only after the physical checks should you consider a driver change. If the failure began immediately after a display-driver update, rolling back may help. Otherwise, use Windows Update or the computer maker's support page rather than a random driver-download site.

Check the display path on a Mac

Open System Settings > Displays after connecting the monitor. If it appears, choose a conservative resolution and refresh rate first. A display can go blank when an adapter or cable cannot carry the selected mode reliably.

Check the Mac's exact model specifications before adding multiple monitors. Apple's display connection guide points users to the model's specifications because the number and resolution of supported external displays vary.

If you are using USB-C, remember that the connector shape does not guarantee video support. The Mac port, cable, adapter and monitor input all need a compatible display mode. A charging cable may power a device without carrying the video signal you expect.

Restart the Mac with the display connected. If the connection runs through a dock, test a direct cable. On a Mac laptop, connect power and briefly open the built-in display while testing so sleep or closed-lid requirements do not confuse the result.

Watch for limits that look like faults

A splitter usually duplicates one signal rather than creating two independent desktops. Some computers support only one external display without a compatible dock or adapter. High refresh rates and high resolutions also need enough bandwidth from every part of the chain.

If the picture appears at a lower resolution or 60 Hz but disappears at a higher setting, the monitor may be fine. The cable, adapter, dock or port may not support the requested mode.

When replacement is reasonable

Replace the cheapest proven fault first. A cable that fails with several devices is an easy call. A dock that fails while a direct connection works is another.

Suspect the monitor itself when its menu is unreliable, it fails with multiple known-good sources and cables, or it shows obvious panel or power problems. Suspect the computer's port when other displays fail on that port but work from another output.

The useful habit is to treat the setup as a chain: source, port, adapter, cable, input and display. Once you find the first link that fails in a controlled test, the no-signal message stops being mysterious.
