Renew Canadian Passport Online: What You Need

Someone using the internet to renew a Canadian Passport online.

Renewing a Canadian passport no longer has to begin with a paper form or a trip to a Service Canada counter.

The federal government has expanded online renewal to eligible adults across Canada. The option is useful, but it is not the fastest route and it does not turn a phone selfie into a passport photo. You still need a professional digital photograph, two references and enough time for the new passport to arrive by mail.

Here is what the online process changes, who can use it and when an in-person application is still the safer choice.

Online renewal is for routine adult applications

You may be able to renew online when your most recent passport was an adult passport, was valid for five or 10 years, and was issued within the last 15 years. The name, date of birth, place of birth and gender identifier requested for the new passport must match the previous one.

A child passport cannot be renewed. A new application is required each time. Online renewal also is not designed for someone who needs to change personal details or who cannot provide the information from their most recent passport.

Before starting, use the government’s official passport renewal eligibility check. Do not begin from an advertisement, an unsolicited message or a look-alike website. The real application runs through the Government of Canada’s IRCC Portal.

Do not use the online option for urgent travel

The biggest limitation is time. Canada says online renewal is for people who need a passport in 20 business days or more. Processing can take up to 20 business days, and mailing time is additional.

Your current passport is cancelled after you submit the online renewal. That matters even if the document has not expired. Do not apply online and expect to keep using the old passport while the new one is processed.

If travel is close, apply in person and choose the service that matches the departure date. Leave room for delays rather than counting backward exactly 20 business days. A rejected photo or a request for more information can break a tight schedule.

You still need a professional digital photo

Online does not mean do-it-yourself. The digital passport photo must be taken in person by a commercial photographer or studio within six months of the application. It cannot be a scan of a printed picture, a phone selfie or an image changed with filters, editing software or AI.

The file must be JPEG, between 200 KB and 5 MB, and use a portrait 3:2 aspect ratio. The accepted size range begins at 1,200 pixels wide by 1,800 pixels high and ends at 3,000 by 4,500. Canada also requires the original file saved from the photographer’s camera.

Ask the studio for both a digital copy and printed photos. The digital file supports the online attempt. The prints give you a practical fallback if you need to switch to a mail or in-person application.

Do not crop or “improve” the file after receiving it. The federal digital passport photo rules are precise, and an altered image can be refused even when it looks better on screen.

A renewal needs references but not a guarantor

An adult passport renewal does not need a guarantor, proof of citizenship or supporting identity documents. It does need two references.

Each reference must be at least 18 and have known you for at least two years. Ask before entering their information and choose people who can answer if Passport Program staff contact them. A reference who is travelling without reliable phone access can cause an avoidable delay.

Gather the previous passport, digital photo, reference details and payment card before opening the application. That reduces the chance of leaving a sensitive form unfinished on a shared device.

The fees are the same core passport fees

For applications submitted in Canada on or after March 31, 2026, the adult fee is $122.50 for a five-year passport or $163.50 for a 10-year passport. The amount is based on the date the application is submitted.

Those are government fees, not a reason to pay a third party to “unlock” online renewal. A private form-filling service cannot guarantee approval or faster processing. Use the official IRCC Portal – New version and verify that the address ends in canada.ca before signing in.

Protect the application like other identity documents

A passport renewal contains enough personal information to attract convincing scams. Use your own device and a trusted connection. Avoid uploading a passport image or digital photo through a link in an unexpected email or text.

Keep the photographer’s file private. It is not just a holiday portrait: it is a current biometric-quality image linked to your official identity. Delete extra copies from public download folders or shared work computers after the application is complete.

Mapletechie’s practical guides focus on the small checks that prevent online convenience from becoming a security problem. For passports, the most useful checks are the real domain, the correct photo file and a travel date that leaves room for mail.

Who should use it?

Online renewal is a good fit for an eligible adult with unchanged information, routine travel plans and access to a professional digital photo. It removes paper, postage and a counter visit without removing the identity checks behind the passport.

Apply in person if the trip is urgent, the application is unusual or you are unsure that the old passport meets the renewal rules. Digital service is valuable when it matches the job. It is not worth risking a departure date simply to avoid a visit.
