Private Browsing Hides Less Than Most People Think

Private browsing is good at one specific job: leaving less browsing data behind on the device after you close the private session.
It is not an invisibility switch. Chrome calls the feature Incognito, Firefox calls it Private Browsing and Safari uses the same name. The labels differ, but the biggest misunderstanding is common to all three.
What private browsing usually does
A private window creates a separate browsing session. When you close every private window or tab, the browser generally removes that session's local history, cookies and form data.
That makes it useful when:
- You share a computer and do not want your searches left in browser history.
- You need to sign into a second account without signing out of the first.
- You want to test a website without your normal cookies and saved session.
- You are using a device temporarily and can close the session when finished.
Safari also says its Private Browsing mode blocks known trackers, removes some identifying tracking information from URLs and adds fingerprinting protections. Those are useful browser protections, but they still do not make the connection anonymous.
Who can still see activity
The website you visit still receives the connection. Your school or employer may still monitor a managed network or device. Your internet provider may still be able to observe the sites or services your connection reaches.
If you sign into an account, the service knows it is you. Private mode does not cancel a login.
Google's own Chrome help page says websites and organizations that manage the network may be able to observe Incognito activity. Mozilla gives the same warning for Firefox.
Files and bookmarks do not magically disappear
A downloaded file normally remains in the Downloads folder after you close the private window. A bookmark you create also remains.
Anything you copy into another app, save to cloud storage, print, screenshot or send can leave its own record. Private mode only controls what the browser stores as part of that session.
It does not protect a compromised device
Private browsing cannot stop spyware, a keylogger, malicious browser extension or screen-recording software already on the device. It also does not block phishing pages or make a dangerous download safe.
If the computer belongs to work or school, device-management software may operate outside the browser. Closing an Incognito window does not remove those records.
What about a VPN?
A VPN changes who can see parts of the connection. It can hide traffic destinations from the local network and internet provider, while the VPN provider becomes a party you must trust.
It does not erase cookies, prevent account logins from identifying you or make a bad website safe. A VPN and a private window solve different problems.
Use the right tool for the job
To keep history off a shared device: use a private window, close every private tab and check Downloads before leaving.
To separate two accounts: a private window works for a temporary session. A separate browser profile is better for regular use.
To reduce tracking: review browser privacy controls, site permissions, extensions and account settings. Safari, Firefox and Chrome do not offer identical protections.
To protect traffic on public Wi-Fi: use HTTPS, keep the device updated and consider a reputable VPN if your threat model requires it.
To hide activity from a managed work or school device: do not assume private mode can do that. Use a personal device and connection for personal browsing, subject to local law and policy.
Close the whole private session
Leaving a private tab open leaves the session available to the next person who uses the device. Some browsers can lock private tabs with biometrics, but a locked tab is not the same as a closed session.
When you are finished, close every private window, check downloaded files and sign out of any service if the browser did not end the session as expected.
The easiest mental model is simple: private browsing helps the browser forget. It does not force the rest of the internet to forget.
