Recover Office 2016 or 2019 After the KB5002907 Update

Some Windows users found that Office 2016 or Office 2019 stopped working after an optional update called KB5002907. Microsoft says an affected installation may show as unlicensed; in rarer cases, Office may have been removed. The company has paused the update's rollout while it investigates.
If this happened to you, keep your purchase information and do not assume you need to buy Microsoft 365. Microsoft says owners can reactivate the Office product they already purchased or reinstall it if necessary. The right route depends on what is still on your PC.
First, check what changed
Open Word or Excel if either is still installed. Go to File > Account and look at the product and activation message. If the application opens but says it is unlicensed, start with reactivation. If the app is missing from Windows, move to the reinstall steps below. If you use a work or school computer, contact the help desk before changing licences or installing software; the organization may manage Office centrally.
Microsoft describes the issue in its KB5002907 support notice. The update was intended for Microsoft 365 Apps installations more than 90 days out of date on certain update channels. It was optional, but the repair action had unexpected effects on some Office 2016 and 2019 devices. Independent reporting from BleepingComputer also documented the pause.
If Office says it is unlicensed
Find the Microsoft account associated with your one-time Office purchase. At Services & subscriptions, sign in and check whether your copy of Office appears. If someone else originally bought or installed it, ask which account they used.
In an Office app, follow the activation prompt and sign in with that same account. If it asks you to select a product, choose the purchased Office licence rather than a trial or a subscription you do not own.
Close and reopen the app, then check File > Account again. If activation still fails, follow Microsoft's Office for Windows activation guide for the exact message on your screen.
A product key may already have been redeemed and linked to an account. Typing it into a random activation site will not help. Use Microsoft pages and the account or purchase record you actually own. If the licence belongs to an employer or school, let its administrator handle it.
If Office is gone
Before reinstalling, save or back up any local documents. The update is about the application, but a backup gives you a safe point before further changes.

Choose the version you own, download it from Microsoft, run the installer, and then open an app to complete activation. Do not pick a different edition simply because it appears first in search results.
If the account has no purchase listed, check your receipt, original packaging or organization licence details before paying for anything. Microsoft offers separate help for installations and reactivation.
Microsoft's reactivation page distinguishes reinstalling from activating a copy that is already present. If the installer says your activation limit has been reached, that is a different problem. What about uninstalling the update?
Microsoft's published resolution is to reactivate or reinstall the purchased product. Its notice does not tell affected users to remove KB5002907 as the first fix. The rollout is already paused. Avoid registry cleaners, unofficial installers or instructions that ask you to disable Windows security to get Office running.
If Office still will not activate after the account and reinstall checks, note the exact error message, your Office edition and the Windows update history, then contact Microsoft support or your organization's administrator. That information will help distinguish this update problem from a separate licence issue.
