Patch guide
Organizations running a SonicWall SMA1000 appliance should check its exact build and install the October security update. CVE-2026-102255 is a critical, pre-authentication server-side request forgery flaw in the product’s Work Place interface.
SonicWall assigns the vulnerability a CVSS score of 10.0. The company says a remote, unauthenticated attacker could make the appliance issue requests on the attacker’s behalf, reach internal functions and perform unauthorized operations.
There is an important limit to the warning: SonicWall says it has no evidence of exploitation in the wild. As of October 7, the flaw was not in the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue, and Censys had not found public proof-of-concept code.
Check whether your product is actually affected
The advisory covers SonicWall SMA1000 series models 6210, 7210 and 8200v running the Work Place interface.
The vulnerable releases are:
- 12.4 branch: 12.4.3-03526 platform hotfix and earlier.
- 12.5 branch: 12.5.0-02952 platform hotfix and earlier.
The fixed releases are:
- 12.4 branch: 12.4.3-03670 platform hotfix or later.
- 12.5 branch: 12.5.0-03082 platform hotfix or later.
SonicWall says the flaw does not affect the SMA 100 Series or SSL VPN running on SonicWall firewall products. Do not apply an SMA1000 instruction to a different SonicWall product simply because both provide remote access.
Use a controlled patch sequence
Follow SonicWall’s release notes and your organization’s change process. A sensible order is:
- Confirm the model, branch and current platform hotfix. Record the version before making changes.
- Identify every node. Include clustered appliances, virtual appliances, disaster-recovery systems and standby nodes.
- Preserve the evidence you may need. Export the supported diagnostic and audit data before an upgrade if your retention process does not already capture it.
- Back up the configuration using SonicWall’s supported procedure. Store the backup somewhere the appliance cannot overwrite.
- Download the fixed build from MySonicWall. Use the release intended for the existing branch unless SonicWall or your support provider instructs otherwise.
- Apply the update across the full deployment. An unpatched standby or secondary node remains part of the attack surface.
- Verify the new version and remote-access function. Confirm the running build, test a legitimate sign-in and check that expected integrations still work.
Reduce exposure while maintenance is pending
If the organization cannot patch immediately, restrict access to the Appliance Management Console through a management VPN or a narrow IP allowlist. Censys notes that AMC is not intended to be a public administrative interface.
That mitigation does not remove the Work Place vulnerability and is not a replacement for the fixed build. Treat it as a way to reduce exposure during the maintenance window.
Censys detected 5,966 hosts and 39,310 web properties that looked like SonicWall SMA1000 or Secure Mobile Access after excluding systems labelled as honeypots. Censys explicitly says its query identifies product presence only. Those numbers are not a count of vulnerable Canadian appliances, unique organizations or confirmed compromises.
Patch, then assess what happened before the patch
Installing a fixed version closes the known flaw. It does not prove that an Internet-facing appliance was untouched beforehand.
For an affected system that was reachable from the Internet, review authentication records, administrative activity, configuration changes and unusual internal requests around the exposure period. Preserve logs in a separate system before normal retention removes them. Escalate unexplained administrator accounts, configuration exports, unexpected outbound connections or activity at unusual hours to the incident-response team.
Do not infer compromise from the vulnerability alone. SonicWall has not reported active exploitation. The purpose of the review is to establish evidence, not to turn a critical severity score into an incident claim.
Three other flaws arrive in the same update
The release also addresses three vulnerabilities that require valid AMC administrator credentials: CVE-2026-102256, an operating-system command injection; CVE-2026-102257, a path-traversal issue; and CVE-2026-102258, stored cross-site scripting.
Those flaws are less exposed than the unauthenticated Work Place issue, but they strengthen the case for installing the complete fixed build rather than trying to work around one CVE.
SonicWall patched two earlier pre-authentication SSRF flaws in this interface during 2026, and both were later added to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue. That history does not prove CVE-2026-102255 will be exploited. It does make waiting for proof a poor patch strategy.
